Dentistry for TMJ (Temporomandibular joint disorder)

Temporomandibular joint disorder occurs when complications arise with the muscles and the jaw in your face. When they fail to work properly, people can feel a popping or clicking when they attempt to move their jaw. Although the exact cause of the misalignment can be difficult to determine, TMJ disorder treatment can alleviate symptoms.

Diagnosing TMJ can be difficult, as many of the symptoms can be indicative of other problems. Symptoms may include jaw pain, headaches, earaches, clicking sounds, tender jaw muscles, and facial swelling.

You should be aware that no single cure exists for the condition. Available treatments include prescribing muscle relaxants and anti-inflammatory drugs to reduce muscle spasms, providing a custom-made appliance that minimises clenching and grinding, and teaching relaxation techniques to control jaw muscle tension.  If your case is more complex, we may refer you to a leading specialist.
