Dental Crowns, Inlays & Onlays

When a tooth becomes damaged either by decay or fracture, it’s important that it be restored in order to preserve functionality and appearance. One of the most effective means of restoration for a tooth that has endured significant trauma is to protect the tooth with a crown.

In cases where teeth might require mild to moderate restorative treatment, an inlay or onlay may be a more suitable course of action. For effective tooth crown treatment and similar restorative procedures, make an appointment with Integrated Dental Canberra at our  Canberra clinic.

How Do Crowns Work?

Tooth crown treatment is used in situations where a tooth has suffered damage to the extent that a filling is unable to restore its functionality and appearance. For cases where the tooth requires major restorative work, we’ll apply a crown to the area.

The crown is designed using state of the art CEREC technology and made from high-grade porcelain. It is intended to cover the entire tooth to your gum line and is regarded as one of the most effective means of restoring the tooth’s ability to function.

Onlays and Inlays

Just as a tooth that has suffered significant damage can be restored to optimal functionality with a crown, Integrated Dental Canberra can also apply tooth crown treatment to slightly lesser damaged or decayed teeth. In these cases, however, we’ll use inlays and onlays specifically designed for cases of mild to moderate dental trauma.

Inlays

As the name suggests, dental inlays are used to repair damage in the indented or cusp surface structure of back teeth. They can also be applied as replacements for old or damaged amalgam (silver) fillings, and in doing so help to create a more natural looking smile. The dentist removes the decay before taking a molded impression of the tooth; a process not unlike that used for building a crown. Made from porcelain, an inlay seals the tooth more efficiently than an amalgam filling.

Onlays

In situations where the damage is too great for an inlay or filling to be applied, the other restorative option available from Integrated Dental Canberra is to apply an onlay. When fixed in place, an onlay can absorb up to 75% more chewing force than a filling and is far more conservative of the tooth structure than a crown.

At Integrated Dental Canberra , we’re committed to using the best ceramic materials for all tooth crown treatment procedures. To learn more or make an appointment, call us today on (02) 6249 8551
