What is Holistic Dental Care?

by | Apr 8, 2021 | Blog

Holistic dentistry is an approach to dental care which encompasses other areas of your health and wellbeing. Where regular dentistry looks at the condition of the teeth and mouth, holistic dentistry looks at the whole person.

At Integrated Dental Canberra, when we talk about ‘holistic’ health, what we’re referring to is the mind body connection caring for your physical, emotional, and spiritual wellbeing. It is underpinned by the belief that no part of the body works in isolation to another. So, what does this mean in terms of dental health?

Overcoming psychological barriers

For one, holistic dentistry is about addressing some of the psychological pain points that associated with dentistry. Dental fear and phobia are incredibly common in Australia and across the world and is one of the biggest barriers to visiting the dentist for many people.

Through holistic dentistry, we focus on tuning into your comfort and overcoming fears. It’s about changing the paradigm that dentistry has to be painful, traumatic and expensive, something we avoid and procrastinate about.

We know no patient is the same, and that there is no one-size-fits-all approach to fixing dental phobia.

As such, we have incorporated a full comfort menu which includes noise cancelling headphones, rescue remedy arnica drops, ASEA range , acupuncture for stress and anxiety, and heated neck and eye pillows.

Empowering you to make the right choices for your long-term oral health

One of our key focuses is ensuring our patients feel empowered to make the decisions that are right for them when it comes to their dental health. Some of the ways we do this is by:

  • Giving you choices where possible on more natural alternative methods including non-fluoridated options.
  • Helping you understand the underlying reason for your oral health issues both as they relate to oral health and the rest of your body.
  • Saliva testing to assess your current risk category.
  • Providing you with options to ease dental anxiety such as sleep dentistry, happy gas, oral sedation, acupuncture, as well as rescue remedy and energy healing, which can help you achieve grounding after your dental procedure.

A multidisciplinary approach

Our multidisciplinary approach to health allows us to look at the patient as a ‘whole person.’ We work alongside naturopaths, dieticians, kinesiologists, chiropractors, reiki specialists and even work with genome healing for addressing past trauma, as well as hypnosis for dental phobia.

An example of our holistic approach in action is the safe amalgam removal using biocompatible materials, along with material sensitivity testing done with our local kinesiologist Anne Barrat.
